July 2013: Cleaning the House, July 15, 2013

The entryway.  A nice house will have a formal entry way, with a closet nearby for coats and shoes and mittens and whatever else you need.  My house is too small for that.  You walk into the small living room, with no barrier between the couch and the dirt.  So, I created my entryway with the shelf that I bought at IKEA.  And when I walk in the door, it's my tendency to kick off my shoes, and drop whatever is in my hands.  This explains a lot about my house, I know.  So, the entryway is not pretty.

Yup.  A huge mess.  And if you look over on the right, you can see the shoe shelf.  (Full disclosure: I am in the process of making a larger shoe shelf/bench.  But I cut some of the boards too small, so now it's not fitting together properly, and I've been putting off trying to fix it--if that's even possible.  I hope I don't have to start over!)

Er, obviously--based on the before picture of the entryway and the picture of this shelf, I don't use it for shoes.  The top is a plastic bin which is my friend's former "shoe jail."  She has two cats that like to eat shoelaces, so laced shoes would go under there where they could not get them.  However, now she has a nicer looking trunk to put shoes in, so she gave me shoe jail to deal with the kitty that likes to pee on shoes.  The problem is that when I see a flat surface, I'm probably going to put something on it.  I love the minimalistic look, but my automatic reactions rule over my aesthetic desires.  Shoe jail has to go, because I'm not using it for shoes, and I couldn't even if I wanted to!
And so it's gone.  The pile of papers there, by the way, are papers to be shredded.  I'm going to have to take the time to do that one of these days.  But first I have to empty the shredder, and I didn't quite get that far tonight.  Plus, it really didn't feel like the type of work I wanted to get done in my month of work.  (Whoa, I just realized I'm about half done with this month!  I've got a long way to go, baby.)

And the entry way just needed general cleaning.  That wastebasket was filled with winter boots and shoes, because I was too lazy to put them away. Yeah.  And the shoes all over the floor were part of the problem above where I couldn't put them on my shoe shelf.  I pretty much expect my sandals will end up back on the rub, but as long as it's not a massive shoe display right inside the door, that will be wonderful.

The box there is stuff to go out to the garage (and some for the car itself).  But it's dark outside, and my garage exterior lights aren't working, AND I'm scared of the dark, so that will have to wait until morning.  Shoe jail will also head out to the garage (it's in the living room right now, creating a tripping hazard.  What's life without adventure?)
